The Archive: Audium VI

Audium VI premiered in 1975 at the grand opening of Audium’s current home on 1616 Bush Street. The new building set the stage for the most ambitious Audium work yet. Stan Shaff & Doug McEachern’s dream of a fully composable environment was realized with speakers & art in the lobby, a 36-speaker sound labyrinth to guide audiences in the main space, and 136 speakers to control real-time spatialization in the main space.

The sound of Audium VI continues in the mold of musique concrète that had defined Audium’s first decade of presentations, alternating between short elertronic passages and long-form field recordings that envelop the audience.
